Institute Format

The JTL Institute takes place online over two six-week seasons. Each season addresses two JTLI themes.

Fall Season runs October 25 - December 9, 2021, and includes a one-week break in November.  The JTL Institute will resume in March 2022 for a six-week Spring Season.

Prior to Fall Season, participants will gain access to the online learning platform and preliminary course materials. Participants will be expected to review these early access materials before the JTL Institute. During each week of the JTL Institute, participants will watch pre-recorded online lectures, read accessible articles and analysis, and join a weekly, facilitated small group discussion session. The weekly small group session allows cohorts of up to 15 participants to develop a learning community and apply JTL Institute knowledge and tools to their law practices. Each season is bookended by an opening and closing community forum with the entire institute of faculty, facilitators, and participants.

The JTL Institute aims to support the wide range of lawyers whose work is needed across the full spectrum of lawyering for just transition. This includes those working to:

  • Provide legal support to low-income, Black, Indigenous, and communities of color that are navigating the most severe climate and economic impacts of the extractive economy

  • Organize with and alongside community members to end extraction and to develop new systems, structures, and cultures needed for just transition

  • Shift their on-going or nascent legal careers towards just transition

  • Educate the broader legal community about the law of just transition

  • Forge connections with fellow community lawyers

Licensed attorneys in the United States are eligible to apply to participate in the 2021-22 Just Transition Lawyering Institute. Not a licensed attorney? No problem. There are many ways to participate in advancing this work, and everyone has a role. Please complete the interest form, and we will endeavor to match you with additional resources and opportunities.
